Advent Meditations with Fulton Sheen The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness— on them, light has shined. -Isaiah 9:2 The O Antiphons refer to the seven antiphons that are prayed immediately before the Magnificat during Vespers of the Liturgy of the Hours (or the Divine Office). Each antiphon begins with the exclamation “O”, thus earning their popular name of the “O Antiphons.” Originally written in Latin around the seventh or eighth centuries, these special antiphons are verses extracted from the Old Testament prophet Isaiah that are titles for the Messiah.

O Emmanuel , Rex et legifer noster, expectratio gentium, et Salvator earum: veni ad salvandum nos, Domines, Deus noster. (6) O Come, Thou Dayspring from on high, and cheer us by thy drawing nigh; disperse the gloomy clouds of night and death's dark shadow put to flight.
