If You Want to Make God Laugh

"If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans."

Though I don't know who originally said it, the above quote is something that I have heard my whole life. Sometimes I feel like it is very true.

The idea for this post came around a week ago, during a talk that I was listening to on the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt. In the handout that was passed out after the talk, there was several sentences that stuck out to me about what our vocations are in life. It was also part of the inspiration for the post that I wrote on St. Catherine of Siena.

We all have a different vocation in life, sometimes we know what it is and sometimes we don't. The only person who knows what each person's vocation in life is God. Sometimes it is hard to understand what it is we are supposed to do in life, but we have to be patient and trust in God. In the reflection for the talk that I went too, the first sentence that jumped out at me was "St. Joseph did not claim the right to judge or criticize God's revered designs; instead he set himself on the path to fulfill them."

The reason that it jumped out at me was because even if we don't know what our vocation in life is, we still have to set ourselves on the path God has given to us so far and trust in him that he will lead us the rest of the way. Another point that jumped out at me from the reflection is "let us remain in peace and in the place where God has placed us." That goes with what I just said about trusting God to know what he is doing with us and our lives.

While it is nice to come up with ideas how how we want to spend our futures and what we want to do with our lives, that doesn't always happen the way that we want it too. It is when we are coming up with all of our future plans that God laughs and shows you that it doesn't always happen the way that you want it too.

"The time that we are bereft of all human help is precisely the time that God will come spiritually to our aid." That particular sentence jumped out at me from the reflection as a reminder that God is always waiting for us to turn to him and to ask him for help. Yes we can ask our friends to help us in deciding things, but God will always be with us no matter what. Even when you are trying to figure out what to do with your life, God is waiting for you to turn to him and ask for his help.

"Let us live in the most trusting confidence in God, who will allow us to confront victoriously all challenges and difficulties." This quote, also from the reflection, reminded me that even though there are many temptations in the world, we just have to trust and lean on God to get us through it all, because in the end we will make it to heaven and.

So even if you don't know what your vocation in life is yet, just trust in God and ask him for help, because he has a plan for all of us.
